Misinterpreted heading of the day

I was checking out one of my usual metal news websites, metal underground, when i come across this story http://www.metalunderground.com/news/details.cfm?newsid=59328 with the heading "Wolverine Finishes Mixing New Album" and all I can think of is the havoc the movie/comic book character would cause on a drum set and/or guitars with those adamantium claws of his...

Alas, there is a band in existance called Wolverine, check out their myspace here: http://www.myspace.com/wolverineoverdose They're Swedeish and have been around since '95..

Details on the new swashbuckle

New Jersey's thrashing pirates, Swashbuckle, are to release their 2nd album, "Crime always pays..." with Nuclear Blast records on September 10th
Interviews with the band, conducted by other people suggest that this is going to be SB's heaviest and fastest record to date..

GnR & Korn downunder

I haven't heard much about this, not alarming considering it's aussie shows [with no sign of NZ shows] of a couple of aging rock acts that I'm hardly interested in, unless my blood-alcohol limit exceeds the legal limit to drive [atleast].

GUNS N’ ROSES will take full advantage of KORN’s crowd pull later this year when they head to Australia for three tour dates. Confirmed shows are as follows:

December 1 – Townsville, QLD @ Reid Park
December 4 – Sydney, NSW @ Sydney Olympic Park
December 7 – Adelaide, SA @ Adelaide Entertainment Centre

I am surprised.

I am surprised that Mushroomhead are still cranking out material. I haven't heard from these guys since their 2nd album "XIII" back in 2003, but they have a new album due out at the end of September through Megaforce records.

Despite the masks and rivalry with other masked band Slipknot, apparently mushroomhead were offered a deal with Roadrunner before Slipknot and that the masks were a ploy to distinguish Mushroomhead, which was a side project, from the main projects/bands that the members were apart of back in '93 or so when it formed.

Coffinfeeder, Fractured, D.I.C, Indifference at shadows at Auckland uni.

There are a few metal gigs coming up at Shadows, I guess it shows [potentially] how desperate the venue situation is, considering Shadows has a restriction on moshing, and smoking (No smoking is thanks to Auckland Uni) on the plus side, beer's cheaper than other places in town and it comes in jugs..

Oi! I'm a fan of the band

Just now, multi-tasking I'm reading the following article regarding influencial band Zao writing new material and taking on the music biz by their lonesome.
    http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=145233

The 1st, and currently only comment reads as follows: More christian crap to clog up our fine Metal scene. First post so you can screw off.
Considering the history of the band and their predecessors in metal who claim to be majorly influenced by them etc etc, it's [several steps down in magnitude but still like] saying the samething about black sabbath- an overstatement, maybe, but while i'm not christian, [or believe in anything,] i'm a fan of the band

Aucklanders go to South Is and have a good time, apparently.

Auckland bands, The Mark of Man and In Dread Response (both on Dead Boy Records) seemed to have had a few shows down in the South Island recently, possibly finishing off this past weekend, I don't know, what i do know is my facebook updates, which is usually reserved for FB game updates, direct copy and pasted jokes/youtube vids/online newspaper articles and inane personal updates bar the personal details..

But today a good few updates regarding the south island gigs in question seem to plague my Sunday F.B early to mid afternoon. And by plague I mean, I noticed a few times, or more than once...

I don't know what I'm bitching about:
- it's not about missing out, I've seen both bands play a few times and recently.
-it's not the south island, I mean, some of my best friends are south islandians.
I think I'm just getting sick of facebook on the weekends- international metal sites that i often visit are quiet over the weekends and so I guess my keyboard rage naturally focus's on the constant updates about how hungover everyone is.

Here's the Norturne Magazine:- Biomechaniod release party poster

Aussie site 3 months late on NZ concern for Mayhem

Australian based Metal Obsession reported a story yesterday (August 27th 2010), that was originally published by 3news.co.nz 3 months ago (May 26th 2010). The story covers a family group concerned over the NZ tour of infamous Norwegian Black metalllers Mayhem; september 21st at the Kings Arms in Auckland.

I would have thought that Aussies trying to poke a finger at NZ (regarding an issue that never came to fruition) would have atleast been up to date with their information, or more on-to-it with timing.
Granted the story appears more a vehicle for the up coming Mayhem tour & the site is a decent one.

Filmmakers do a David Attenborough on black metals most infamous

We understand this being released via Shock Records in Australia, so fingers crossed it'll eventually make it over the ditch.
http://www.factorytwentyfive.com/until-the-light-takes-us/

Possibly more in depth than the metal doco's Canadian Sam Dunn made a few years ago, winning several film festival awards, but being down here in New Zealand we'll be lucky to see the DVD release-or blu-ray if we're truely Grim...

Synopsis

Until The Light Takes Us tells the story of black metal. Part music scene and part cultural uprising, black metal rose to worldwide notoriety in the mid-nineties when a rash of suicides, murders, and church burnings accompanied the explosive artistic growth and output of a music scene that would forever redefine what heavy metal is and what it stands for to other musicians, artists and music fans world-wide. Until The Light Takes Us goes behind the highly sensationalized media reports of "Satanists running amok in Europe" to examine the complex and largely misunderstood principles and beliefs that led to this rebellion against both Christianity and modern culture.

To capture this on film, directors Aaron Aites and Audrey Ewell moved to Norway and lived with the musicians for several years, building relationships that allowed them to create a surprisingly intimate portrait of this violent, but ultimately misunderstood, movement. The result is a poignant, moving story that’s as much about the idea that reality is composed of whatever the most people believe, regardless of what’s actually true, as it is about a music scene that blazed a path of murder and arson across the northern sky.

Double the 'Attack, all B.S

The Axe Attack annual 6 hour Black Sabbath tribute show "SABBATHON" will take place Sunday 31 Oct. The biggest, blackest night on radio will be at your place from 6pm.

This year has seen many major developments for the band- tragically R.J Dio passed away, Ozzy & Iommi legally kissed and made up (seems kinda stink, as it appeared as though they had to wait for Dio to pass before burying the hatchet) Ozzy's name sake touring U.S festival (ozzfest) made a come back...

New Septicflesh album

From: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Season-of-Mist/49433279807?ref=ts

"The recordings will take place in Athens (in a studio owned by the band) and in Prague (again with the help of the Filmharmonic Orchestra of Prague under the direction of Chris Antoniou) from August until the mid September 2010. The mix will take place in Sweden in October 2010. The band is looking forward to work for the first time with well known producer Peter Tägtgren."

Sweeeet...

New Dimmu Borgir material

'Gateways', the first single from the new album 'Abrahadabra' by Dimmu Borgir will be released on iTunes from Friday, August 20th (or atleast that's what they're saying overseas). Album's due out late September/ Early October.

Favourite track of the day:

Heard this on the radio- the few times I happen to listen to a radio.

This looks interesting

The latest Revolver Mag, I wants it!

Here's the link to their website: http://www.revolvermag.com/features/post/zakk-wylde-cover-of-revolver-including-black-label-society-patch-avail/

Mainly because of the 10pages of oral history about the making of Pantera's Cowboys from Hell, It's bound to be some "Metal Magic" (Drinking Game for teetotalers: take a shot everytime Terry Glaze is mentioned)

Dunno when it's coming out in NZ, but if you find a good magazine store, you couild probably pick it up for [airfreighted] price, or wait 3 months for it to be $5-$8 cheaper just because it spent that 3months in the cargo hold of a container ship.

NZ radio (an auckland perspective)

Years ago, growing up without the internet acting as a major conduit of information, where you are mere seconds away from finding library sized information on obscure topics, the only place to hear and learn of developments in the Heavy metal world was either through the few magazines that were available in NZ or through the (now) nation wide radio show, the Axe Attack- in Auckland since '99 and it used to be only 2hrs on Tuesdays, if i can remember properly. I was relatively quite young back then, so I didn't have any sort of grasp on the shape of local metal etc, not like i do today- from my chair...

Go check out http://www.theaxeattack.co.nz/thisweek.aspx (as of 20th August) because I want that $5000 back tattoo, winning that would be so frikkin sweet.

However, as you [the reader of this internet bound blog] can testify to: up-to-the-minute news in detail regarding events/happenings half way across the world. It is through this medium comes the discovery that the axe attack might have competition.

New to the broadcasting arena: Planet fm's [106.4fm in Auckland] Metal After Dark (or Metal AD) recently teamed up with kiwi fm's the kiwi metal bar, to put on a gig at the Dogs Bollix recently. In terms of my opening rant (re:internet) this show (indeed the format of the station) blurs the lines between 'tune and dial' radio & internet streaming 'radio'. It's been barely a few months since it's inception, but through solid facebook work they seem to have built a following. It was through facebook and an update from the show's host, Caleb, that the impetus for this 'story' originated.
The [abridged] update is as follows:
alrighty folks the deal with metal ad this week it will be on but since kyle and sean wont be on air until next week ive decided to do an online version this week [only]. metal ad in full go next week but show for tonight avail soon as is last weeks.

On the same station, The House of Noizz (same guys also publish Slaughterama) they've been broadcasting for years, and tend to standout thanks to Max Thrashers thick Russian accent- which does sound awesome btw.

Kiwi fm's The Metal Kiwi Bar, probably named after the Juice TV metal hour also run/hosted by Riccardo (see: singer Just One Fix) and someone else: Matt Bell. I personally haven't tuned into this show yet- mainly because I can never remember what to tune it to when I'm near a radio- but I have visited the Kiwi Fm offices/studio, a few years ago.

95bfm's Hard fast and Heavy show has been around since the late 80's, and has had several different host- most recently Dale took over from Nick Anderson several years ago- there used to be a 'co-host' with Dale called 'random guy' currently unsure if this is a rotating slot for Guest Selecters or what. The easiest way to describe this show is that they play everything [metal]- it'll go from the corniest of folk metal to tech-death etc.

Like Planet fm, 95bfm has two dedicated metal shows (and random metal popping up throughout the night and sometimes day) Nocturnal Dominion I would suggest, is far more focussed in their vision of metal radio. Probably designed that way (i.e. focussed vs everything), but to be fair 95Bfm isn't known for their fondness of heavy metal, and I'd love to see the Nocturnal Dominion lads in the Bfm studio I'm imagining a lot of corpse paint.

Children of bodom enter studio

The band has announced they are or soon will be entering a Finnish recording studio, the album is tentatively due for release early 2011, or sometime in 2011.

I gotta wonder if CoB has gotten to that level- like metallica, and other majority favourites, where every release since some arbitrary early release, that is usually a choice between 2-3 early albums, sometimes even the debut, where the fans love to say "I love {this band} but they haven't had a good album since {arbitrary choice from early albums}

I remember their show in NZ at the (now defunct for metal) Transmission Room, the place was packed and the crowd was energetic as all hell.

Double take of the day: Antagonist - World In Decline

The Southern California band that had the same name as a prominent NZ act (see: Antagonist A.D) released an album today, World in Decline via Prosthetic Records
.
Meanwhile, kiwi's Antagonist A.D are currently touring Europe and are apparently experiencing some issues with a fill in guitarist. But are due back in NZ for a supporting slot at the sold out (Auckland only) Parkway Drive gig in september.

I tried googling "Antagonist - World In Decline" and came up with little more than links to download the album for free (legal or not, i dunno but I'm not gonna risk it) but being the kind not to search too hard for something like this (when I'm technically procrastinating at the moment)
http://www.myspace.com/antagonist

The album is not yet available in the itunes store (NZ), there are probably label/distribution deals to work out, but I imagine one issue could be that the itunes store still lists a bit of music as the old  name from the NZ Antagonist A.D (that being "Distance" E.P & "These Cities, Our Graves")

Dethklok on blu-ray

Season 3 of the awesomeness that is Metalocalypse, which has been (atleast in part) in the States at the end of last year, will be released on November 2nd in DVD and Blu-ray formats (in the states, in NZ...dunno the dates.)

This news is thanks to http://www.dethklok.org/ which is a fan-site (I think) but they're pretty on to it...

Needless to say there are going to be many Kiwi's heading over, considering the festival has only had 1 announcement so far, and that happened to include Iron Maiden, Slayer, Rob Zombie and so many more.
