holiday metal shows

Our posts about local radio shows seem to get a good number of views, and here's me thinking that scouring the web for free legit song downloads was the way to go...

So, despite the fact you can just google it and find it out in 2 seconds:

The Rock fm's The Axe Attack: last show for 2010 last Sunday, and will be returning to the airwaves Jan 23rd 2011.

95bfm's Hard fast & heavy show, Planet fm's Hardcore.hard seems not to be taking a break.

Can't tell shit from the kiwi fm kiwi metal bar, the station website doesn't have a page for them and there's just a generic holiday message on their facebook.

Metal ad is apparently returning to the airwaves with a new name, format, style etc in 2011, but to be honest I'm quite disappointed with these guys. When I first saw all the buzz about it on the interwebs and all the hype they pumped out, and all the potential I envisaged for them. But, in the end they only aired a handful of shows before disappearing. They should sort their shit out, and on their return: stick to it, otherwise f...-off.

Manowar re-doing Battle Hymns

The title says it all really, but their getting in Count Dooku/Saruman aka Christopher Lee for "Dark Avenger"
The updated album, titled "Battle Hymns 2011" will probably rub fans of old Manowar the wrong way, but stoked will be fans of the newer manowar..
Lee recently released a "metal" concept album about Charlemagne, and has apparently worked with the of odd power metal band at various times, i guess.

shit yeah, I wanna frikkin I-something now:

Australian Black Metal, tours NZ

I am getting so lazy these days, *screen shot* *crop* *post on internet* haven't even replied my attendance yet..

more news I saw today

Converge, a band who recently visited NZ and tore up the Kings Arms, are starting the writing process this week for a new album.

Dethcore new comers Oceano are due to release their 2nd album, Contagion on Metalblade and if you click here to pre-order it (or any combo of new cd to merch) you go in the draw to win an Ipad- valid only thru the US store so I don't know if that means it's limited to USA residents or not..

Slaughterama, a Zine run by the guys who do "The House of Noizz" has a new issue out now, for details and to download it for free check out: http://www.houseofnoizz.com/slaughterama.php
NOTE: If you pay for it, i.e. for a hard copy- it'll come with a free NZ sampler CD, available via trade me in a few days or something.

The Souless, formerly Ignominious Incarceration, will be entering the studio [one in Britain] in mid-December and working there thru til January2011- due for an April 2011 release

Monday, November 1, 2010

A few bands enter studio, etc

The Haunted are working on a new album- they're in Antfarm studios [Denmark] now [check out their facebook page for pics of their recordings]

Gojira are "... in Los Angeles next week in the studio with Logan Mader, recording an EP to support the action of Sea Shepherd led by Paul Watson. A lot of people are showing their support already. We'll have very special guests singing on these 4 songs." not really album news, but I'll still be checking it out despite stories of the sea sheppard organisation being 'morally bankrupt' and a means to an end kinda group.

In Flames are also due to begin work on a new album, they'll be entering IF studios- in the heart of Gothenburg! [Sweden] if ever there was a place to record an album, smack bang in the middle of the world-renowned Gothenburg would be the place. The band recorded A sense of Purpose at IF, other bands who've recorded there include The Haunted [Versus], and a bunch of others.

Chimaira guitarist Rob Arnold, along with Bleed the Sky's Austin D'Amond are in a new side-project, "The Elite" they have an EP due out "WW3 EP" [available via iTunes, apparently] though it sounds closer to Chimaira than Black Metal as the band name would suggest [as the sayings go- Black Metal & Elitism go togeather like Pantera and Camo-Cargo shorts]

My Halloween

Being in New Zealand, the holiday catered for goths [I use the term loosely, least my goth friends see this] and the overly [if secretly] theatrical alike [and not always mutually exclusive] i.e. Halloween as far as I've experienced it, has never really been enthusiastically 'celebrated' [beyond those with said character anomalies.]
However, this year came a culmination of several events amongst my circle of friends [i mean drinking buddies] in both personal and work respects, which brought us all together with reasons, both positive and negative, to crash the weekend into a ditch and leave it there bleeding.
I went dressed as Admiral No Beard from Swashbuckle [despite looking more like a mix of commodore redrum and bootsman collins] or in other words, a pirate... the usual messy, memory loss inducing night on Saturday followed, leading to a group of us waking up in the car at a beach on the other side of Auckland [turns out our sober driver's girlfriend lives up the road from this beach] a flash cafe cooked breakfast later and we eventually made it back home for ghostbusters on the telly.

It's nothing really to do with metal [other than the fact- it was what we had blasting at all opportunities], but was a particularly awesome weekend that I wished happened more often.

Our Last Enemy Album Launch Tour

The NZ dates for the "Our Last Enemy Album Launch Tour" have been amended [if they haven't been & it's been correct like this the whole time- I apologize, my sleep deprivation and terrible-ness with numbers was to blame...]

New New Zealand Dates:
Friday 07/01/11 Medusa Bar, Wellington NZ
Saturday 08/01/11 The Kings Arms, Auckland NZ

Any more information than this, check out: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=141310135895474&ref=nf

It's only temporary but:

Hope this swings by NZ

Darkest hour w/ Carnifex tour Oz early 2011, It's no secret that one of the prime reasons for my interest in this tour is that the Carnifex released a cover of Angel of Death, which I find a bit stirring [in my pants, but it's not gay cos it's Slayer]

This looks massive, but unfortunately it's like 1000miles away from me

I don't know half the bands [less than half really] but it still looks huge. I couildn't even imagine something like this happening in NZ- with 23 bands [including NZ ex-pats Akaname] with more to be announced. And for onlu $15AUD [or $28NZ ;p nah, but exchange rates are a bitch]

Local [Auckland] radio update. [updated]

This is gonna probably seem a bit hypocritical, since I don't/can't/forget to listen to the local metal shows, especially these past few weeks- but luckily they have an internet footprint, which is what I'm gonna look for:

The Axe Attack (the Rock): The giant, the tower of power of all things metal and radio in NZ hosts 6hours of Sabbath on the next show this Sunday (Oct 31st), from 6pm- I'm gonna attempt to organise a BBQ, have a few cold beers and invite my stoner brother- make the night complete ;p [hell, I'm not being biased just because the gracious, most brutally awesome Axe Man has included a link to this very blog in his own regular email update, as previously reported ;p]

The Hard Fast Heavy show (95bfm): These guy(s) must have a deal with the promoters of the Megadeth headlined No Sleep Til Auckland tour, 'cos host, Dale, is interviewing damn near all the bands on the lineup. So far facebook/ their blog [it's now http://www.hardfastheavy.com/] tells me they've interviewed [someone from] Parkway Drive, Katatonia, August Burns Red, Suicide Silence, GWAR and 3 Inches of Blood.

Hardcore.Hard (planet fm): Is it's own beast, completely different to the short-lived Metal AD. Hosts Dug and db recently had the lads from Antagonist AD in the radio booth with them, and on this Thursday's show, they're having someone by the name of Cash- vocalist for now split Evil Priest [I did catch these guys play once or twice back in the day]

The Kiwi Metal Bar (Kiwi FM): all these guys seem to be doing at the moment is promoting the Tainted tour in November, well their facebook page is at least [and the only mention on the kiwi FM website is of said tour]. Not a bad tour to have your name on, I wonder if I could get this blogs name on a tour like that, or will my insatiable desire for anonymity be my downfall?!?!...

The House of Noizz (Planet fm): These guys seem to be humming along nicely- their fb group is quite active and their youtube vids are quite good to watch as well.. I wonder- it would probably be these lads to buy [had they the money] life size versions of the original Manowar album art. It would look good in the back ground to their youtube vids [I haven't seen all of their clips so can't say if they've already done so]

Want giant manowar album cover art?

http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=148203
Apparently Manowar think it's fans are gonna be cool to play upwards of $375US for large HD prints [i.e. reproductions] of the original full scale art.
Granted, if I were married [so that having giant art on my walls depicting topless muscled dudes wasn't TOTALLY homoerotic] and real rich, I'd love to order a piece or two. But until I win Lotto and can afford a trophy wife- My Manowar are gonna have to remain unpurchased..

What an odd line up

Ahead of the release of a new studio album, Cradle of Filth have announce they are touring [somewhere in the world that's not NZ] with Nachtmystium, someone/thing called Daniel Lioneye and strangely Turisas...
Sounds about as right a tour lineup as Dimmu Borgir supporting Korn [which actually happened] i.e. it's not entirely too far-fetched to believe, it's just a bit odd...

The Ocean, robbed, spain, how are they carrying so much cash

The Ocean, an experimental German 'collective' who have [or will] put out 2 albums this year (Heliocentric and Anthropocentric) were robbed on a highway near Madrid, as they tour with The Dillinger Escape Plan. Used to the invasions of customs officials etc the thieves had fake badges and stuff, but suprisingly managed to get away with over 6000 Euros, which is about $11,111NZ as of 26Oct.

Read more about it, here: http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=155007651207281

And if you're a fan of the band and wanna help out, on their store (?) you can donate 5 Euro where you ...will receive a copy of the police report and a Thank You card signed by all band members.

free mp3s, i think

Go to http://www.theworldsloudest.com/ and follow the instructions, and I guesss you get to download the sampler listed below- I'm not on a computer where I can download it just yet, but if it works I will...

City of fire comments on Oz tour, nothing about leaving Nz out of it

I saw this posted on a metal news site, and I noticed a distinct lack of Kiwi flavour to their comments.
They were due to play a few shows in NZ, I was looking forward to their show at the Kings Arms in early september, while I haven't managed to get their album, I've youtubed a few songs and rather enjoy them, sometimes.
Their cancellation came quite quietly too, I remember hearing it from a mate who found out through his work, or workmates..
City of Fire has issued the following recap of the band's recent Australian tour dates:
"CoF would like to thank Soulfly, Incite and all of the tour crew for making their first Australian tour this September as successful and enjoyable as it was. And, of course, much love to the beautiful people of Australia that came out to support the shows.
"The band had such a great time with you all that they're already planning a trip back for April/May of next year. Lock up your daughters. Also, thanks to Mr. Jed Simon for joining us on guitar for this tour. Our ears are still ringing."

High tech A&R

Roadrunner records have launched their http://signmeto.roadrunnerrecords.com/ website, a band networking *slash* popularity contest. I guess the idea is to get regular punters and people in bands to make profiles and anyone else registered to the site can vote or like or something their favourite local bands.

It's yet to be proven what the outcome to all this will be, whether opening the doors to everyone to their website remind users that RR are a record company wishing to sell you music [I'm a lot more independent with my cd purchases: no amount of advertising will sway my wallet, infact it will often stop me from buying an album, or atleast stay well clear of any band that has a traditional advertising budget of any kind]

I might check it out for a laugh, and hope bands with the most friends don't win- if they, in actual fact, suck.

New Ziltoid artwork/comic

Ziltoid is coming to life via rockband and comic strips. News [as far as I can ascertain] is sketchy but Devin Townsend is apparently currently working on some Ziltoid material for the game [is it? I see plenty of news reports about it, but I don't own a games console of any modern description so I assume it's that extension of guitar hero...] The Ziltoid material, obviously, includes dialogue- which if a recent tweet from devin is anything to go by, you'll be in for a disparaging remarks until you've proven yourself, indeed.

No idea about the comic, but honestly I'd be happier if it were artwork for a new Ziltoid record..

In other Devin related news, I gather work on his upcoming album "Ghost" is winding up. Some art work's been done and recordings finished [I think] so expect news of a release date soon [if not already]

Free Irish Music, decent

http://www.myspace.com/themmartyrs
Them Martyrs: An ever evolving Irish metal act, sludgy in a way kinda broadest way to describe them is progressive, hardcore metal.

Anyways, don't take my word for it: in the blog on their myspace it tells you how to get to their bandcamp page to download some of their music for free. Incidentally, the link to said bandcamp page is: http://themmartyrs.bandcamp.com/album/french-extremity

They recorded in France, initially you may think it odd for an Irish band to bipass something like England, but I remember hearing years ago that the Irish have a cetain affinity or ally with the French. I don't know about that but they plan on releasing a physical copy of French Extremity- touring with it around Ireland then in December- tour Italy.

Gig poster

The Haunted to start on new record

The Swedis group is due to enter a Danish studio today- Monday 18th Oct, with producer Tue Madsen- to begin work on the bands 7th studio album. Watch Century Media records in early-mid 2011 for it. There was apparently some news a little while ago that they'd signed with C.M again for the release of this yet to be recorded album, which is not really news worthy news, since they released their previous three albums on the label..
Anyways, I enjoyed the "Revolver", "The Dead Eye" & "Versus" and their ealier work: "the Haunted made me do it" and "One kill wonder" has a reminiscent quality about them, for me. A lot of time spent listening to them on my walkman/cd player in the early 00's [although looking at the timelines; in my memory there was a larger [time] gap between One Kill Wonder and revolver than the 1 year that wikipeadia suggests. I sat on those 2 earlier records for a while]

Seriously, more metal covering pop songs, enough already!

http://www.arthemismusic.com/downloads/
Go to this link to download several metal versions of pop songs... I got nothing against a good cover song, or metal covering songs from non-metal genres: I loved it when I  first heard Children of Bodom's Opps, I did it again... but with all the covers of what seems to be relatively recent pop songs, just proves you ain't metal; you listen to that top-40, commercial radio station [being forced to listen to it at work is another story]
http://www.arthemismusic.com/downloads/

Luckily [after listening to the songs] it's not direct covers [I think, I'm not too familiar with the originals], as you see so often- lyrics are the same [which is the only telling factor as to what song is which..]

GWAR going to Harvard

There's something in the states called harvard Lampoon, or somew such thing- I'm assuming it's rich and fancy as...

The Lampoon put out an official statement on GWAR's induction:

"In honor of their prodigious achievements of slaughter, brutality, conquer, mayhem, and madness, The Harvard Lampoon is delighted to present GWAR with the award of "Most Terrible, Vile, Disgusting, Disturbed, yet Revoltingly Awesome Band Ever." On October 16th the band will travel to Cambridge, Massachusetts to visit the Castle and celebrate in a private induction ceremony, banquet, and live human sacrifice in their honor."

When reached for a comment on this prestigious honor Oderus briefly laid down his crack pipe and muttered:
"Me and the guys are as pleased as pig-shit to accept this near-meaningless accolade from a bunch of booze-sodden degenerates. To walk in the shoes that tread in the footsteps that tied the shoelaces that were Elijah Wood's big ass hairy hobbit feet fills me with a feeling not unlike lust but nothing like nausea. To mumble the words that were the drool that became the Jell-o that fell out of Bill Cosby's butt is the third most important thing to happen to me today. And finally, to lap at the glistening shores that is the toilet that Sarah Silverman left a dookie in is akin to having sex with Jesus's wife. We are honored, pleased, and gassy as hell as we accept this mantle-crushing award and the considerable attached cash prize...there is a cash prize, right?"

In other GWAR news...

The band has announced that they will be performing for the first time on network television on October 28th, when they take to the stage on "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon". The shows airs 12:35 Eastern and the band will be tearing through their new single "Zombies, March!"
GWAR is giving human scum across the globe with the chance to watch their Halloween show streaming live from The Rave/Eagle's Club in Milwaukee. The event will be a Pay Per View extravaganza and is scheduled to kick of at 11:00 PM Eastern Halloween night. Make sure to head over to GWARLive.com to sign up for the Pay Per View event of a lifetime today!
Tickets for this exclusive stream are $2.99 if you order before October 15, $3.99 if you order between October 16-30 and $4.99 the day of the broadcast.

Metalblade teams up with Cyclone Empire Records

Metal Blade Records is proud to announce a new partnership with underground German label, Cyclone Empire. Metal Blade will have the pleasure of bringing some of the most intense and cutting edge metal in Europe to North American shores. Cyclone Empire has been leading the underground in Europe with releases from the legendary Evocation, as well as underground acts such as Demonical, The Grotesquery, Black Sun Aeon, Funebrarum, Demiurg, Facebreakerand many more.

Metalblade has plenty of big bands, and I think i have a compilation from Cyclone Empire. I wonder if this extends beyond the US

Satyricon working on new album

The pair have had a year off, and apparently are going to start work- writing a new album, in a few months time. Next year they're gonna re-release their albums with new art and remastering where needed.

Hey, remember when they were coming to NZ, but then didn't 'cos one of them got smart to a Japanese Airport official... yeah.. I don't remember if they bothered to come back or not, weird..

Luckily we have a new phrase, cf steel panther

Apparently some band by the name of Weezer are planning on releasing an album of b-sides soon. The cover art work is apparently as shown below.

Luckily, as out dated as it is: the term is more known for it's roots amoungst the Manowar crowd, the term of course is used by many other groups, each proclaiming theirs is the true metal [usually genre purists- i.e. thrash, death etc], when in fact the beauty of metal and the reason why it has survived as long as it has is it's adapability, essentially, it's all inclusive nature [of the music, not the fans]

I foresee a few mainstream radio/tv people having fun with it, but like the Eagles of Death Metal [who, disappointingly hae nothing to do with death metal] the use of a reference to metal is ironic, or something. i'm hoping the album is actually called this- because it's ever so easy to photoshop pics these days, and if i've been had- i'll look the fool. aye? [I don't wanna fact check it, cos that'll mean looking up Weezer... *dry heaves*]

Al, Ministry's back

After releasing the final Ministry Album, and farewelling that band, I'd assumed Al Jorgenson would've taken a rest after his 30years of making music- but he's working on Buck Satan: which features Rick Nielsen (CHEAP TRICK), Tony Campos (STATIC-X), Mike Scaccia (RIGOR MORTIS) and Dave Lombardo (SLAYER).

Also something about an auction, where you can bid for bits and pieces from the mans career, almost everything is up for grabs- personally I wouldn't mind one of his leather jackets
For this and a general array of other music related auction things head to: http://www.backstageauctions.com/

Three free songs,

1) Fans of Killswitch Engage will apparently like this one: the original singer, Jesse Leech and Adam D have come togeather to form 'Times of Grace' Their album isn't due out til mid-Jan 2011, but their label is offering a free advanced download of the song 'Strength in Numbers' for a limited time [48hrs] starting at 4am this Saturday [Oct 16th] head over to http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/ during the weekend for the free song, an email will probably be required.

2) Vanisher, a band featuring members from Bloodjinn and Glass Casket, are offering a free song 'I am failure' Go to http://www.metalinjection.net/av/vanisher-free-mp3-download for a bit more of a run down and to download the song.

3) Traditional Heavy Metallers, White Wizzard, are offering their cover of Dio's  We Rock, for the price of an email address. Head over to http://earache.com/we_rock/ for the download and a bit more info on the band.

Metallica for a lazy Sunday

Go check out the link below for a slowed down version of Metallicas Ride the Lightening. It's been manually slowed, still sounds awesome but begs for a proper version done at this speed. As someone mentioned, it does sound a lot 'doomier' but i need to find someone who hasn't heard the normal speed version to get a proper take on it- when you know the source material so well any change is difficult to judge with an unbiased ear..
http://cosmichearse.blogspot.com/2010/10/slow-ride.html

BTW: this is essentially metallica songs up for a free download, they have been changed but get in quick before they get pulled.

New Sepultura songs

Remember Sepultura, the legendary Brazilians Death metal come thrashers who took the world by storm throughout the late 80's and early to mid 90's, before frontman, and lets face it: driving force, Max Cavalera, left- forcing the band to redefine themselves and forever dooming them to answer questions of a re-union.
Well, they've signed to Nuclear Blast Records to release a new album in 2011 and are apparently going to be showing off a new song in an upcoming gig in Sao Paulo.
It's a pity neither Sepultura or any Max Cavalera lead band has managed to find their way to NZ within living memory

Carthaginian W/ Cobra Kan and Leeches Nov 13th

I don't know if this is my thing [I think I remember Carthaginian as a good band to see] but the poster looks cool...

As previously reported local heroes, Sinate have [or are due to] returned from Europe, where they recorded their 3rd album.
Several NZ shows have been announced, but I don't know how long they'll be staying in NZ on the 3rd album- when logic [& checking out what other bands do] dictates a mammoth effort of touring [globally] to promote them & the new album.

ps I have The Red Shore's new album

It's gonna have a fight on its hands to move Swashbuckles excellent latest release, for space in my cd player. i mite try to dub it to cassette too- so i can listen to it whenever I'm in my car..

Despised Icon not coming to NZ, only Aussie- semi-colon, open bracket.

On their last hurrah before disappearing into the ether, a band from which i have at least one album from & enjoy it thoroughly, is not going to be visiting the island country of New Zealand, within which I currently reside. Granted, I never seem to have the money or time to actually leave my usual routine and attend a live gig, but the thought would've been nice.

From metalobsession.net
Early next month, Canada’s Despised Icon will be touring Australia for the final time. Joined nationally by The Red Shore and Thy Art Is Murder, the tour will make six stops which will undoubtedly be full of brutal slams and monstrous breakdowns. Topping things off, the local supports;

Lemmy gets the "This is your Life" Treatment in new doco

Finally a documentary that I really wanna see. In all seriousness it looks wicked as, while it's annoying kiss-ass-ery factor of all the famous people and musicians they talk to about Lemmy, is as yet unknown: for the subject matter and content I could probably withstand a high factor of kiss-ass-ery

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBe0Ba7vLMI
"Over four decades, Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister has registered an immeasurable impact on music history. At 62, he remains the living embodiment of the rock and roll lifestyle, and this feature-length documentary tells his story, one of a hard-living rock icon who continues to enjoy the life of a man half his age. 'LEMMY' includes interviews with friends, family, bandmates past and present and admirers/peers such as Slash, Dave Grohl, Ozzy Osbourne, Peter Hook, Alice Cooper, Mick Jones of The Clash, C.C. Deville of Posion and many others. The film crushes all myths, rumours and speculation about Lemmy, while giving his millions of fans more access to his life than ever before."

Free tracks from Aussie Death Metal; Eternal Rest

http://eternalrest.bandcamp.com/
Both "demo 2010" and their 2009 "Seize of Anubis" EP on the bandcamp page are available for free download.

The Brisbane based band, Eternal Rest is due to head down to Tasmania for a couple of weeks in December to record their debut Full length with Joe Haley from Psycroptic (and The Amenta for a bit) [I guess he'd have finished touring the world with his Nuclear Blast signed band for the moment]
They'll no doubt tour extensively once the album is released- here's hoping they pop over to NZ for a show or two.

Working out to music, such a radical idea

If you check out: http://www.invisibleoranges.com/2010/09/metal-mixtape-iron-will-1/
It's about some one who has a very specific, possibly fussy, attention to music. Wonder if they've ever worked anywhere that doesn't let employees wear ipods...
Anyways, the point is, the author has put together a mixtape [or more modernly, playlist] of music they like to work out to. there's a link to download, [as a big zip file]
I'm gonna post it simply because it's on a blog that seems to be relatively well read, and it's free music- the legality there of, is unknown to me...

Cheeky free song, Band of Orcs

If you check out: http://metalsanaz.com/Blog/HALLOFTHEFROZENDEAD there's a song by "Band of Orcs" entitled 'Hall of the Frozen Dead'

It's been posted as a quicktime file, so if you wanted to have the song as an mp3 on your computer so you can put it on your mp3 player, then save the page, it will save as a web page, or something-or-rather, along with a folder bearing the same name.
Then all you need to do is go check out where you saved it to, and find the folder for the saved page- look in it and there should be an mp3 file- this is the song.

It takes more time to tell you about it than to actually do.
If this is a piece of cake/ pointing out the obvious, then aren't you special, to others out there: here's yet another free song [until the person running metal sanaz's site realises the mistake]

Free Roadrunner compilation album

For this you will need to sign up to their website, http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/ [the american one, i checked out the Aussie site and nothing....] but details of the compilation is below, and getting oneself a free email account is sooo hard these days...>warning sarcasm<

archenemy to enter recording studio in december

In some interview vocalist Angela Gossow she mentions it straight away. I would read the whole thing, but can't really be bothered ;p
But if they're entering the studio in December, I guess it'll be ok to anticipate a new album mid to late 2011, and considering their last album was them covering themselves...

A bit can be funny for a laugh, but to take it seriously is another story...

 "Punk Goes Pop Vol.3" tracklisting:
1. Breathe Carolina – “Down” (Jay Sean ft. Lil Wayne)
2. Woe, Is Me – “Hot ‘N Cold” (Katy Perry)
3. Artist Vs Poet – “Bad Romance” (Lady GaGa)
4. Mayday Parade – “In My Head” (Jason Derulo)
5. Asking Alexandria – “Right Now (Na Na Na)” (Akon)
6. This Century – “Paper Planes” (M.I.A.)
7. The Word Alive – “Heartless” (Kanye West)
8. Family Force 5 – “Bulletproof” ( La Roux)
9. Of Mice & Men – “Blame It” (Jamie Foxx ft. T-Pain)
10. Miss May I – “Run This Town” ( Jay-Z ft. Kanye West, Rihanna)
11. The Ready Set – “Airplanes” ( B.o.B ft. Hayley Williams)
12. Cute Is What We Aim For – “Dead And Gone” ( T.I. ft. Justin Timberlake)
13. Sparks The Rescue – “Need You Now” (Lady Antebellum)
14. We Came As Romans – “My Love” ( Justin Timberlake ft. T.I.)

and yet they still complain about music piracy

This is a chart of what various artists get PER gig- that's one show, one night only. Granted I don't know what context to take this in, like does Kiss, on $500,000 a show spend $490,000 on the show etc etc, but still there's a lot of money being oftered or demanded by these acts and I don't know most of them or even heard them in passing...

BDO announcement, deja vu

Jan 21st 2011 in Auckland is the date, and the line up looks as though the unoriginal and lazy organisers looked at old posters and randomly picked BDO Alumni to perform again... [atleast it's slightly better than lazily spending a day trolling pop music tv and radio for bands half a year before the event.]

To be fair, I'm probably just annoyed because the BDO doesn't have the same aura about it as when I was a kid- my heavy metal leanings don't help with that, which Australias Soundwave has taken it now.

Rammstein, who are only performing one show in the US this year [which given Americas insatiable appetite for tours is rather surprising] joins BDO, again.
Tool, again.
Iggy again.
Deftones again...
Shihad, again.

At around $150 (probably plus booking fee) a ticket, the second announcement had better have some decency to it, otherwise I'd not even toy with the idea of thinking about going.

Inferno in Parnell

It's been years since I went out to Parnell to drink myself silly, and end up getting drunk and resentful of the rich kid douche bags that swarm the place. I don't know what it's like these days, but a metal gig in the heart of ponch country would be a goer for me!

Any ways, the facebook crowd, NZ Metal Army are putting on a halloween metal gig just at the top of the rise with Wellington band Nort and a host of regulars [for the NZ Metal Army atleast] (Just One Fix, Fuelset, Burn the Scripture, the poster says it all)

I think all the bands playing have new [or recent] albums/material out, if you haven't managed to pick any up yet- they'll probably be selling them on the night.

The intricacies of the the Finnish

Lordi's new Album, "Babez for Breakfast" broken the top 10, and Hevisaurus, a heavy metal group who dresses as dinosaurs and who's lyrics are suitable for children, broke the top 5...

A step too far?

Jaldaboath, a British band with a debut album out soon called "The Rise Of The Heraldic Beasts"

Of course the thing is, they are; British Heraldic Templar Metal.

The bands label's website says: After years of secretive quests in faraway exotic lands, Sir Jaldaboath found his way back to his British homeland. Shortly following his arrival, he joined forces with The Mad Monk and Sir Bodrick to establish the Order of Jaldaboath. After several meetings underneath the shadow-casting arches of Castle Rhydian, the dark order presented its unique brand of heraldic Templar metal. The style combines an intoxicating mix of metal, Middle Ages, and Monty Python, while remaining innovatively fresh and distinguishing itself from the Medieval rock sounds of already established bands. Catchy melodies, galloping drums, exquisitely sarcastic and humorous lyrics, and Sir Jaldaboath's unmistakable clean vocal style makes songs such as "Hark the Herald" or "Seek the Grail" impossible to resist. The band's debut "The Rise of the Heraldic Beasts" easily transports the listener to a world of knights, fair and noble damsels, fire-spewing dragons, and cheeky jesters. So sound off the trumpets and wave your colorful banners from the highest towers, for Jaldaboath rides out to embark on a new musical crusade! Fans of Alestorm's extraordinary Scottish Pirate Metal will love Jaldaboath's heraldic Templar metal!

Ignominious Incarceration becomes The Soulless

Apparently, due to their success as Ignominious Incarceration, the band wanted to have a simpler name- the brits are obviously savy enough to realise the scarifies needed to be made in order to break the US market good and proper.

To the news I say "NOOOOOOOO" I rather liked the bands long name, so from now on in my computer I will be labeling all "The Soulless" songs as "The Soulless (Ignominious Incarceration)" under artist..

Rob Zombie's doing another movie

I know there are a few fans out there, I being one.
"The Lords Of Salem", is a thriller set in modern day Salem, where the inhabitants receive a demonic visit from a 300-year old coven of witches.Check out: http://www.deadline.com/2010/09/rob-zombie-bewitched-by-lords-of-salem/ for more info

Vinyl from beyond the grave (and bank balnce)

The most basic package from http://www.andvinyly.com/ a website that will turn your ashes into up to 30 discs with 12minutes a side, costs 3000 british pounds- the 24 minutes can consist of anything from voice to music recordings.
You can even have your record distributed through 'reputable' vinyl stores worldwide.

Same name (almost) Anno Domini (OZ) vs Anno Domini Mortus (NZ)

Both bands, it seems, have (or will) support(ed) the infamous Mayhem during their most recent NZ/OZ tour.

Kiwi's Anno Domini Mortus, hail from New Plymouth and have 3 or so E.P releases. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Anno-Domini-Mortus/81339343659?ref=ts#!/pages/Anno-Domini-Mortus/81339343659?v=info&ref=ts

Sydney's Anno Domini are possibly less 'elite' [certainly spending less on corpse paint] their sound is described as "an amalgamation of styles with influences as diverse as Behemoth, Vader, Dimmu Borgir and Amon Amarth" But they will be releasing their debut album on 24th September 2010 [coinciding with their supporting Mayhem slot] http://www.myspace.com/annodomini

From the mouth of devin, well facebook via twitter or something

Copy/pasted from the mans facebook page, 22 Sept 2010 about 9.45pm, to give you a measure of time... As much as the internet has allowed information to instantly be zapped from Canada to NZ, often it's superfluous and you want an off button for certain things, but I find it so very interesting to think, as I sit here in an overlight computer station. Getting into devin's music was probably the one really good piece of advice I took from all the internet metal news sites/blogs that seem to gush every time he farts..

Devin Townsend I'll decide over the next few days, I have to take a roadtrip and I'll see if I'm just overly fired up tonight in hindsight. Thanks guys!

Devin Townsend We recorded 16 songs for Ghost and there almost all done and pretty far into the mix, so I'm trying to decide what goes and I like it all...

Devin Townsend Well the deadline for both is February, they need art by January, but if I bust ass, we could just say fuck it and put it all out... :/

Devin Townsend Sitting here, late night listening to Ghost wondering if it should just be a double album... time is an issue right now, maybe Decon as well

Devin Townsend At the risk of sounding redundant, @katepple 's contributions to Ghost are staggeringly beautiful.
Yesterday at 5:38pm via RSS Graffiti

Devin Townsend I start mixing on Weds. I think it's turned out great through the fog... Kat Epple is sending her parts now, and she is beyond amazing.
Monday at 3:38am via RSS Graffiti

Devin Townsend Hey all, getting back on track here... Looks like Ghost has become two different albums, one pretty, one dark.

Metallica

Metallica are in christchurch, showing the crowds down there what's what, but I'm still seeing blabbermouth reports about front man, James Hetfield doing normal stuff on his day off/ non-performing time.

Egads man! how dare a musician who's built his career to such a point where his band sells out [almost] whole tours of countries half the world away from his own, take time off to endulge himself in a car ride... but if the photographer wasn't bothering him I guess it's ok- like when the police say "if you got nothing to hide..."

Our Last Enemy touring NZ

They're a Metal/ Industrial/ Gothic metal band from Sydney.

Thursday 07/10/10 San Francisco Bathhouse, Wellington, NZ

Friday 08/10/10 The Bedford, Christchurch, NZ *AA*

Saturday 09/10/10 The Kings Arms, Auckland, NZ

Band myspace bio: Our Last Enemy are the dark horses of Australia’s heavy music scene – if you haven’t heard the name yet, remember it – you’ll be hearing a lot of it very soon. A brutal live reputation for theatrically unpredictable shows has created a strong live following and unparalleled local buzz - Our Last Enemy are known for crazed audience interactions and an intensity that results in band member injuries and crowd frenzies.
Ultimately it’s the killer tracks, infusing industrial rhythms with lashings of dark metalcore rock and chunky metal riffs, that keeps the punters headbanging and coming back for more. This unique blend of extreme genres resulted in Our Last Enemy’s current EP release, ‘…Is Death’ selling out two pressings, single ‘10,000 Headless Horses’ being featured in soundtracks and compilations, and remixes becoming dark/alternative nightclub favourites.
After a big year in 09 including support slots for STATIC X, DOPE and HANZEL UND GRETYL, and decamping to LA to record the debut album with Christian Olde Wolbers (Fear Factory) 2010 is set to be even bigger with a huge tour planned for mid year. With a new lineup that includes Bizz on guitar from legendary cult Florida industrial metal band Genitortures and The Undead (ex-Misfits) and Craig on keys and samples the bands profile is raised to a truly international level.

movie rumour, should be pretty Fantastic.

Sacha Baron Cohen As Freddie Mercury in a film about Queen and the lead up to their 1985 Live Aid Concert?
When I first read this rumour on the massive rumour mill that is the internet, my first thought [for a split second] was "Nah, can't be.." but then you picture it in your mind- the mix of Borats mo & Bruno's camp/gay.. Slowly you accept the idea, and are talking to people like "yeah it's a good casting choice" and other lines of conversation, as if you know anything about the behind the scenes of movies.
Till finally you're writing an internet blog to further spread the rumour

No Sleep Til Auckland Exclusive!

We have an exclusive regarding an appearance at the December 10th metal/punk festival:
As of a few days ago, I received email confirmation that, ahem, I will be going to No Sleep til auckland: i bought my tickets on the internet:
I'm quietly stoked, but not too keen on venturing over to the inner suburbs- during the daytime, where i hear they have 'joggers' at all hours of the work day, and that alleged cafes also operate during similar times. I shall begin tolerance training, so I will be able to witness trophy wives driving rediculiously expensive SUVs and not throw rocks and abuse...

Dimmu Borgir new album & appearance at Soundwave 2011

As a final nail in the coffin of the decision to head over the ditch to check out Soundwave 2011 *hey boss! can I have pay advance?*
The big day out has been the only big festival I've ever been to, so I'll take the advice of mates and check out all the bands, and schedules and figure out the best plan of attack for the day (if I actually manage to scrounge up the cash for it)

Norwegian symphonic black metallers Dimmu Borgir have confirmed it's appearance at Soundwave Festival 2011. Dimmu Borgir also join the newly added acts Saxon, Coheed and Cambria, Bring Me the Horizon and the Murderdolls. The appearance will be in support of Dimmu Borgir's forthcoming studio album "Abrahadabra" which is set for release on October 12th, 2010 through Nuclear Blast Records.

Metal Makes Mainstream with Magazine Mega-compliment for Mark of Man

I was in a store today, which was where I came across the 15-21 Sept issue of The Groove Guide, and on page 19 the Album of the Week is our (i.e. us being metal) The Mark of Man

Speaking of whoring out gigs, heres a fancy looking poster

Although 'whoring' suggests a certain renumeration, which alas is not the case here..

Your ears will still be ringing from Exodus

One of the local supports of the 1st of October Exodus Gig at the Kings Arms, Razorwyre are making the most of their time in the big city by having another gig around the corner:

Galatos Main Room, October 2nd (Saturday) 8pm

Razorwyre, Rackets, Dreams of the Dead, Slavegrind, Vallum Indendium, Dakota Scream, Royal Fortune.

Hardcore show, Oct 9th, Kings Arms

Despite being a metal-head-in-the-extreme I do appreciate the odd bit of hardcore. I can't visualise the 2 stage situation, unless there's one outside. Details below, and surpirsingly enough- there's only 1 or 2 bands I haven't heard of..

Saturday October 9th Kings Arms,
2 Stages, 3 hours of RELENTLESS hardcore
9pm – 12am

The Burial
Die Alone
Shitripper
Parents
Crawler
Backswing
Make Your Move
The Voyage

Sinate coming back to NZ

Legendary N.Z metallers, Sinate are returning to New Zealand with a 3rd album ready for release and will be celebrating their homecoming with a Tour in November/December. Details T.B.A.

Some time ago (June i think) finished their 3 third album in Sweden at Studio Underground (with Pelle Saether: Engineer/Producer and band member of Grand Design "that will bring the songs and sound of eighties rock back into your media players and back onto the big stages.")

I think the Sinate lads have worked at this studio for other releases, and maybe when the Sheppard boys were with 8 foot sativa, but don't quote me on that...

NZers Winter Deluge makes news

From: http://www.metalunderground.com/news/details.cfm?newsid=59806

New Zealand black metal band Winter Deluge has issued the following announcement about re-releasing an EP and launching a debut full-length album via Miceli Records:

"Winter Deluge have been offered a record deal with an overseas label called Miceli Records and we will be re-releasing our first EP 'Vehement Visions of Nihilism' with a new cover and 3 bonus instrumental tracks. Also we will be releasing our debut full length 'As the Earth fades into Obscurity' through Miceli Records so the future looks promising."

I should really give my on editorial comment, or congratulations, but honeslty; I don't really know the bands music or the label they've signed to. All the best boys and I look forward to checking out your work.

Metallica still playing chch. good on ya blabbermouth

I was reading http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=145987 and realised the article was published sept.13th, the gig sept 21st, so ,earthquake aside, if someone had plans to make the gig- telling them now that it is (or hypothetically wasn't) on- might just be cutting it a bit fine

From a few days earlier, on the metallica website:
We're still traveling to Christchurch . . . hope to see YOU there!

We're in route to Melbourne and we're psyched about getting out there and getting amongst it again. We kinda make it a policy here to not respond to rumors and speculation, however the recent magnitude 7.2 earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand is certainly a unique situation and we are aware that there have been various reports that we would not make it there.

Well, we're coming. Full bore. Between working through European volcanic ash clouds last April (and not missing any shows . . . ) and living in California most of our lives, we are no strangers to the effects of natural disasters and our hearts go out to those of you affected by this major tremor. What we can and will do is what we always do - come and play, give 110%, and "rock the house" (!!) in our own unique way for the two nights we're in Christchurch.

We're looking forward to our Fall in Australia and New Zealand . . . it's just beginning!!

Misinterpreted headline of the day

From: http://www.metalhammer.co.uk/news/coal-chamber-members-reunite/ reads:

Former members of the Spookycore Nu-Metal band have formed a new band. Get full details inside!
Don’t even bother sniggering at Coal Chamber, dude. That first album smashed it! Anyway, guitarist Miguel ‘Meegs’ Rascon and drummer Mike Cox have revealed that they are to be part of a new band called We Are The Riot.

Now, naturally with a headline like "Coal Chamber Members Re-Unite" I straight away jumped to the conclusion that the band was reforming and I could relive the late 90's, but sadly, it's more likely they needed the money or attention...

Could they release such a song these days?

In March of 1968, Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, released "Young Girl" [apparently] reaching #2 in the US, and #1 in the UK.

If, like me, you have family who don't exactly see eye to eye with the genre of metal and cling to old 'classic' songs: remind them of the pedo nature of lyrics of this, which is just one song randomly picked because i just heard it on an oldies radio station. [thanks work...]

Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl
You're much too young, girl

With all the charms of a woman
You've kept the secret of your youth
You led me to believe
You're old enough
To give me Love
And now it hurts to know the truth

Whaoo-oh-oh
Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl
You're much too young, girl

Beneath your perfume and make-up
You're just a baby in disguise
And though you know
That it's wrong to be
Alone with me
That come on look is in your eyes

Whaoo-oh-oh
Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl
You're much too young, girl

So hurry home to your Mama
I'm sure she wonders where you are
Get out of here
Before I have the time
To change my mind
'Cause I'm afraid we'll go too far

Whaoo-oh-oh
Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl
You're much too young, girl

Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl
You're much too young, girl

Soundwave festival announces more

Recently, We the Kings, Bring Me the Horizon and H20 were added to the Australian touring festival lineup- and there's still a second announcement to go!.

3 inches bloody disgustiing

3 Inches of Blood's record label [century media] reports that the premier of the bands new music video [for Silent Killer] was banned by mtv- for it's bloody content. So website http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/ has picked up the slack and have exclusively debut the clip. (if you didn't catch that: http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/news/music/987 )

The Canadians will be down our way for "No Sleep til" Auckland festival- the tickets for which go on sale TODAY! at midday, selling for $106.90 each...

Oh please no...

I just saw a post on metalinsider.net that read: Linkin Park is streaming a new song called “Waiting For The End” on their MySpace page.
I found this news to be rather disturbing, but recall the time when their debut album had just been released, and a class mate of mine at school tried to argue that it was the heaviest, most metal thing out. [Same guy tried to suggest I was trendy by wearing a Sepultura-Morbid Visions sew-on patch]
